Bearing the nickname “Bigfoot” and seeming like the old guardian spirit of the forest, Dan often frequented the Elwha River Hot Springs on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, when Julie Thi Underhill made this portrait in 1995. Dan was still healthy, muscular, and strong well into his eighties, which he partly attributed to the weekly hike through forest to the rustic thermal pools, where mineral-laden water replenishes nutrients to those who soak there. In season, Dan also brought dahlia blooms from his garden, which he pressed into the moss above the largest of the springs.
