Svay Khleang

Chăm men in the mosque in Svay Khleang recall the search-and-destroy missions and massacres following their 1975 resistance against the Khmer Rouge. After the purge, an estimated 600 of the town’s 6,200 residents survived the regime.

The Chăm there are among 500,000 Cambodian Muslim adherents to a more orthodox form of Shafi‘i Sunni Islam. Svay Khleang is a commune in Krouch Chhmar district of Kampong Cham province, Cambodia.
